The “Win a Holiday” Hoax! VIRUS WARNING !!!!!! If you receive an email titled “WIN A HOLIDAY” DO NOT open it. Typical signs of a hoax here: It will erase everything on your hard drive. Forward this letter out to as many people as you can. and above we see the other classic hoax indication (to forward the hoax to as many people as you can. This is a new, very malicious virus and not many people know about it. This information was announced yesterday morning from Microsoft; A “new” virus would be no big deal. We see over 250 new viruses each month. MicroSoft is not in the business of announcing viruses. please share it with everyone that might access the internet. Once again, pass this along to EVERYONE in our address book so that this may be stopped. Also, do not open or even look at any mail that says “RETURNED OR UNABLE TO DELIVER” The “RETURNED OR UNABLE TO DELIVER” is copied from other hoaxes that we have covered here and it is intended to make people think they have seen the supposed virus message because almost everyone that sends much email will occasionally get a “RETURNED OR UNABLE TO DELIVER” when there is a problem delivering a message. (This should be no cause for alarm!) This virus will attach itself to your computer components and render them useless. Immediately delete any mail items that say this. AOL has said that this is a very dangerous virus and that there is NO remedy this to all your online friends ASAP. Ahhh, another appeal to authority (AOL) and, of course, unverifiable. And we are expected to believe that AOL is an authority on viruses?! And we see yet another exhortation to send this hoax to all our friends.

ASP Virus Hoax The is no ASP Virus Virus Alert! Please Forward and Distribute Immediately!

A computer virus was distributed by the Association of Shareware Professionals. The ASP wants to make sure that the shareware principle works for you. To prevent this virus from getting into the hands of children or people who might deliberately or accidentally cause harm, you are requested to contact these officials for clarification before using any software displaying the logo shown above. Bill Dickson president@asp-shareware.org Tim Bougan 76004.1543@compuserve.com Harold Holmes hholmes@lincolnbeach.com Tom Guthery flixprod@eden.com Ross Greenberg ross_msn@msn.com Borje Hagsten hagsten@algonet.se Phill Hellewell phelle@globalnet.co.uk ### The above note uses the old ASP logo (a registered trade mark) without permission and seems to be an attempt by some individual to disparage the ASP and the software of its members. In addition to the (typical for hoaxes) request to “forward and distribute” it includes the email addresses of some ASP officials in an attempt to annoy these individuals. Note that it does not mention where the supposed virus is located. If it really wanted to help you, it would certainly tell you what to avoid. Instead it tries to implicate all ASP member software. The ASP does NOT distribute software as implied by the above note. The ASP is an association of shareware developers, publishers, and distributors and provides the customer assurance that by trying and/or purchasing software from an ASP member that they will get high quality software and deal with a professional business that meets the the standards of the ASP.

The “Organ Theft” Hoax

Organ Theft Hoax Warning This story came from the “INSERT ANY NEWSPAPER HERE” newspaper. Apparently it occurred during Fall Premier-a University tradition that is a celebration of the end of midterms. “Reason to not party anymore”- This guy went out last Saturday night to a party. He was having a good time, had a couple of beers and some girl seemed to like him and invited him to go to another party. He quickly agreed and decided to go along with her. She took him to a party in some apartment and they continued= to drink, and even got involved with some other drugs (unknown which). The next thing he knew, he woke up completely naked in a bathtub filled with ice. He was still feeling the effects of the drugs, but looked around to see he was alone. He looked down at his chest, which had: “CALL 911 OR YOU WILL DIE” written on it in lipstick. He saw a phone was on a stand next to the tub, so he picked it up and dialed. He explained to the EMS operator what the situation was and that he didn’t know where he was, what he took, or why he was really calling. She advised him to get out of the tub. He did, and she asked him to look himself over in the mirror. He did, and appeared normal, so she t= old him to check his back. He did, only to find two 9 inch slits on his lower back. She told him to get back in the tub immediately, and they sent a rescue team over. Apparently, after being examined, he found out more of what had happened. His kidneys were stolen. They are worth 10,000 dollars each on the black market. I wish to warn you about a new crime ring that is targeting business travelers. This ring is well organized, well funded, has very skilled personnel, and is currently in most major cities and recently very active in New Orleans. The crime begins when a business traveler goes to a lounge for a drink at the end of the work day. A person in the bar walks up as they sit alone and offers to buy them a drink. The last thing the traveler remembers until they wake up in a hotel room bath tub, their body submerged to their neck in ice, is sipping that drink. There is a note taped to the wall instructing them not to move and to call 911. A phone is on a small table next to the bathtub for them to call. The business traveler calls who have become quite familiar with this crime. The business traveler is instructed by the 911 operator to very slowly and carefully reach behind them and feel if there is a tube protruding from their lower back. The business traveler finds the tube and answers, “Yes.” The 911 operator tells them to remain still, having already sent paramedics to help. The operator knows that both of the business traveler’s kidneys have been harvested. This is not a scam or out of a science fiction novel, it is real. It is documented and confirmable. If you travel or someone close to you travels, please be careful. Sadly, this is very true. My husband is a Houston Firefighter/EMT and they have received alerts regarding this crime ring. It is to be taken very seriously. The daughter of a friend of a fellow firefighter had this happen to her. Skilled doctor’s are performing these crimes! (which, by the way have been highly noted in the Las Vegas area). Additionally, the military has received alerts regarding this. This story blew me away. I really want as many people to see this as possible so please bounce this to whoever you can.

The “Chain Letter ” Virus Hoax!
“This is not a joke…if you do not forward this e-mail to 20 other people………………… your computer will be a living hell thanks to one of our very own little ingenus viruses. I repeat this is not a joke this virus wil come to you only a week after you open this piece of mail in a very undiscreet e-mail If you open this e-mail after opening others, it just might come as a letter from your “buddy” No, this isn’t a “joke” but it’s certainly a hoax. If you have been reading our hoax page, you will notice the characteristic request to forward the hoax to others. This is also has the poor spelling that is found in many such juvenile messages (e.g., ingenus, undiscreet). Watch out! You have one week..starting now. If this virus gets in it won’t come back out. It will slowly delete 1 file a day from system IRQ files, startup files and win 95 kernels for registery address {1593338-489h985} Thank you for your time……. #:) hahahahaha SCREW YOU!!! With the “hahahaha” and the “SCREW YOU!!!!” text, I would not have expected people to respond to this hoax but we have received copies of this that indicate quite a large number of people have followed the instructions in the hoax. Just as people continue to respond to paper mail chain letters, they seem gullible enough to respond to this hoax. Fortunately, this hoax doesn’t make supernatural claims (“bad luck”) but simply makes claims that are impossible (being infected by a non-existent virus if you don’t forward the hoax) so there’s no reason to even think about complying this chain letter email hoax.

The “The Bill Gates / Windows 98 ” Hoax!”
Hello Everyone, And thank you for signing up for my Beta Email
Tracking Application or (BETA) for short. My name is Bill Gates.
Here at Microsoft we have just compiled an e-mail tracing program
that tracks everyone to whom this message is forwarded to. It
does this through an unique IP (Internet Protocol) address log
book database.

We are experimenting with this and need your help. Forward this
to everyone you know and if it reaches 1000 people everyone on
the list you will receive $1000 and a copy of Windows98 at my
expense.

Enjoy.

Note: Duplicate entries will not be counted. You will be notified
by email with further instructions once this email has reached
1000 people. Windows98 will not be shipped until it has been
released to the general public.

Your friend,
Bill Gates & The Microsoft Development Team.
The classic forward this to “all your friends” is present above as a red flag indicating this is a hoax. This hoax has (I suppose) gotten wider distribution than normal since people would like to believe that Bill Gates might send them $1000 and a copy of Windows 98.
