The NaughtyRobot Spider Hoax

The NaughtyRobot Spider Hoax

This hoax says appears as a note sent to the user from his/her own ID. The note says that it was "sent to you by NaughtyRobot, an Internet spider that crawls into your server through a tiny hole in the World Wide Web." Note further states that "NaughtyRobot" has captured your credit card number, mailing address and telephone number as well as other personal information. The note says you should "alert your [Internet provider], contact your local police, disconnect your telephone, and report your credit cards as lost."

The original distribution of this hoax message scard a number of internet users that spread warnings about this (hoax) "internet spider".

It is reasonably easy to fake (spoof) an internet address and the fact that some original notes appeared to orginate from the user's own email address gave credibility to this hoax. The fact that frightened users then forwarded warnings based on this note gave it a life of its own.
